Short answer: in summer and the milder months (May, June, September) choose outdoor parties: a pool, a farm, an adventure park. In winter and on rainy days, pick somewhere under a roof: an indoor play centre, a trampoline park, an escape room. In spring and autumn, mix: an outdoor plan with an indoor fallback. Details for each time of year are below.
Catalonia's weather, in broad strokes
Most of Catalonia has a Mediterranean climate: hot, fairly humid summers on the coast, mild winters by the sea and colder ones inland and in the Pyrenees, and rain that tends to fall in autumn and spring. There are differences: Lleida and the interior are colder in winter and hotter in summer than Barcelona, Tarragona or the Girona coast. The practical lesson: do not rely on the weather if the plan is entirely outdoors, and always ask what happens if it rains.
Winter (December-February): choose a roof
When it is cold, the star is a covered, heated space. Indoor play centres, trampoline parks, kids' clubs and escape rooms work the same whether it rains or freezes. The advantages: the schedule does not depend on daylight, children do not need heavy coats and the snack is served in a private room. According to our data, of the 242 venues with a public price, 170 are indoor, so it is the most common option.
Spring (March-May): the best time for a farm
Spring is usually the most pleasant season for countryside activities: a farm with animals, a horse ride or an adventure park. The weather can change, though, so bring a covered plan B. During Easter week (Semana Santa / Setmana Santa) many schools are on holiday and Easter Monday is a public holiday in Catalonia, so dates around it fill up sooner. May and June are also the months of many first communions and end-of-year parties, so Saturdays are booked well in advance.
Summer (June-September): water and shade
When the heat arrives, water rules. A party at a swimming pool or with water activities is the classic choice; farm and countryside parties also work, but early or late in the day, with shade and water. At midday in August, an outdoor space without shade is not a good idea for small children. Air-conditioned venues remain a good alternative. Note that when the school year ends (late June) and during the holidays, some families travel and some venues change their opening hours or close for a few weeks: confirm the dates.
For concrete ideas, you can filter the search by venue, type of plan and city.
Autumn (September-November): back to school
School starts in September and diaries fill up again: birthdays cluster at weekends. Autumn often brings rain, so covered plans come back into favour, although October and early November can have very good days for outdoor fun. If your child's birthday is in October or November, book a plan that works either way.
Halloween and the Castanyada
31 October overlaps with the Catalan tradition of the Castanyada (chestnuts and panellets; 1 November, All Saints' Day, is a public holiday). Many venues run themed Halloween parties with decorations, costumes and gently spooky games. Tips: ask whether the theme is included or an extra, match the scariness to the age (for the youngest, friendly monsters are better) and book early, because that weekend fills up. You can also hold an October birthday with costumes in any private room.
Christmas and the Three Kings
The school Christmas holidays run roughly from late December to just after 6 January (Three Kings' Day). St Stephen's Day (26 December) is a public holiday in Catalonia. For a birthday on those dates there are two things to know: plenty of indoor options, but limited availability, because many families are away or have family commitments, and some venues close on specific days (25 December, 1 and 6 January). If the birthday falls in December or January, check which days the venue opens and consider celebrating a few days earlier or later with friends.
When to book
- High-season weekends (spring, October, long weekends and the eves of holidays): book several weeks ahead.
- Weekdays or afternoons: there is usually more room and sometimes more flexibility.
- Summer and Christmas: confirm opening hours before sending invitations.
- Plan B: if you book an outdoor space, ask about the rain and date-change policy.
Prices are indicative and should be confirmed with each venue. For a group of 15 children, based on data from 242 venues with a public price on 23.10.2026, the median total is 184 euros at indoor venues, 255 euros outdoors and 270 euros at those that combine both. It is not a rule: it depends on what each offer includes. If budget comes first, see cheap birthday parties.
Frequently asked questions
Which season is cheapest?
There is no general cheap season: each venue sets its own price. Weekdays are usually cheaper than Saturdays. Check each venue's terms.
What if it rains on the day of an outdoor party?
Ask before booking whether there is covered space, a date change or a refund. Do not leave it to the last day.
How far ahead should I book?
Generally, the sooner the better for Saturdays and holidays; weekdays need less notice. Each venue has its own rules.
